I have needed something to display my medals from the races I’ve done for awhile now. When I did my first 1/2 marathon back in 2011 (Disney’s Princess 1/2 Marathon) I just bought a pretty flower hook from Joann Fabrics to hang it up with. I didn’t know if I would ever have more than that 1 medal to display, so the small hook was fine. Fast forward to this month where I now have 6 medals to display (it will be 7 next month). My pretty little flower hook just isn’t cuttin’ it anymore.
I’ve been looking at all sorts of medal displays online and I haven’t really found one that I was just head over heels in love with. And with how expensive they all were I wasn’t going to buy something that I didn’t love. My mom kept telling me to make one myself and so this past weekend I finally decided to do just that. Armed with my 40% off coupon and a 25% off your total regular priced purchase coupon, I went to Michael’s in search of something that would work. **I also need something to display my race bibs, so I was looking for that as well.
I stood in the unfinished wood stuffs aisle for awhile trying to figure things out. I picked out a wooden plaque that I was going to get to make something for my bibs and started looking at something to match for my medals. I found two things that would work but then realized that I would need to buy hooks for both of these projects. Hmm. I still held on to them but kept looking. I turned around to look at some wooden letters and right next to them was an unfinished piece that had four pegs. BINGO! This would be perfect to hang my medals AND I wouldn’t have to go to home depot to get hooks. One of the best things about it was that with my 40% off coupon it would just be $2.99. I put the other two things back and decided just to focus on the medal hanger.
I ran over to the paint section and picked up two things of paint – green and brown. I wanted to paint it to match my bed spread in my room (where this will go). The paint were only 69 cents each and I was able to use the 25% off coupon on those. So for less than $4 I was able to pick up the materials for my project.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the piece before I started, so you will just have to use your imagination. It was unpainted when I got it, so there isn’t much to imagine. I’m really happy with how it turned out. It took me less than an hour to paint the whole thing and hang it. I had to add brackets to the back to hang it, but I all ready had those in my tool box. I love that I have somewhere to display all of my medals. And since it has four pegs I have plenty of room to add more medals before I run out of room.
Now I just have to work on something for all those race bibs. My friend Steph is having some of her race bibs made in a bag through Mile 22. I love the idea of having something that I could use at other races, but the price point ($95 for the bag I’d want) is a little high for me. I’m excited to see how hers turns out, then maybe I’ll reconsider ordering one of my own. We shall see.
