At the beginning of the year I was invited to a blogger event at Gigi’s Cupcakes here in Orlando. They were inviting gluten-free bloggers to come learn about, and try, their full line of gluten-free cupcakes. As I’m sure you may have noticed, I am far from gluten-free but the event hostess wanted a few gluten-full bloggers to come along to do some comparisons. Gluten-full versus gluten-free? You want me to try DOUBLE the cupcakes? Okay, if I must.
I have to admit something upfront. Gigi’s Cupcakes was not at the top of my favorite cupcakes in Orlando list. Why you ask? It wasn’t because I didn’t like the cake. Or didn’t like the frosting. Or didn’t like the flavor combinations. It was simply because the cupcakes had ENTIRELY too much frosting. Too much you say? Yes, too much. I am a lover of frosting but I felt like the amount of frosting on Gigi’s cupcakes completely overpowered the cake and because of this I wasn’t a fan. So imagine my surprise when I found out there are actually THREE different “frosting levels” that you can get on your Gigi’s Cupcakes. Score!
The biggest frosting level is the Gigi’s Signature which is three swirls. Then the middle one is the Pedastal with two swirls. And the Rosette which is just one swirl. Keep in mind that all regular size cupcakes are made with the Gigi’s Signature frosting levels, so if you want something else you just have to call and ask. Now that I knew you could get less frosting on the cupcakes from Gigi’s I was in heaven. Bring on the strawberry shortcake cupcakes!
Now, back to the gluten-free part of this story. Beginning in January of this year, every single Gigi’s location will bake at least three gluten-free gourmet cupcakes every day. And just like their regular weekly menu, they’ve already got the daily flavors set, so you know what is baked fresh every day of the year. That means you can always count on enjoying a truly gourmet dessert, whether you struggle with flour-related allergies or simply want to eat healthier every day. Check out their new daily gluten-free menu!
During the event those of us that weren’t gluten-free were able to compare both versions of each of the cupcakes offered. While I could tell a difference between the two, in most cases they were both equally delicious. But there was one instance where the gluten-free version was hands down the better option – the Chocolate Salted Caramel. Which is a special gluten-free dark chocolate cake filled with caramel, topped with caramel frosting and dipped in ganache with a pinch of sea salt on top. Holy heck it was amazing!
The biggest takeaway from this event was that in addition to being able to just walk into Gigi’s Cupcakes on any given day and have at least three gluten-free options, you could also order a whole box of gluten-free cupcakes for your whole gluten-full/gluten-free family to enjoy. No need to buy half one and half of the other. Just buy a dozen gluten-free cupcakes and serve them! No one needs to know there is anything different about the cupcakes. Delicious is delicious right?
So if you are gluten-free or just looking to try something different, head over to Gigi’s Cupcakes for a tasty treat. Just remember that if you want less frosting you will have to call ahead. Man, now I want cupcakes. Anyone want to bring me one?
