After the Zooma race in Amelia Island my mom and I decided to stick around for the rest of the weekend in nearby Fernandina Beach. I found us a great deal on a beachside motel on Travelzoo, so it made staying to whole weekend very reasonably priced.
Our first stop after checking out of the Omni (and before checking into our hotel in Fernandina Beach) was to find breakfast/lunch. All I could think about was breakfast food, so I pulled up my Yelp app to see what was nearby. The closest thing was the Doo Wop’s Best 50’s Diner. It was on the way to the hotel and had reasonable reviews on Yelp. It didn’t look like much from the outside because it was in a very plain strip plaza. Inside was a different story as they took their 50’s diner theme very seriously. Breakfast was served all day so both mom and I took advantage of that. I decided to go with the Big Breakfast which included Two buttermilk pancakes, two eggs, Two sausage links, two bacon strips plus hash browns or grits, and choice of bread for just $9.25. I must admit that I made a pretty good dent in that breakfast. The food was tasty, the price was right, and the service was good – the perfect post-race breakfast spot.
After breakfast we called our hotel, the Seaside Amelia Inn, to see if we could check in a little early. Our room was ready so we headed there to check in before continuing our day. It was so cute! The entire place had been redone from top to bottom. For just $69 we got a room that included free wi-fi and a full cooked to order breakfast in the morning. We got our key and headed up to our room. As we opened the door we both started laughing… and kept on laughing. It was one of the smallest rooms we had EVER seen. Like ever. But even with its small size it was everything you could need in a beachside room – a kitchenette, flat screen tv, view of the pool, and a very spacious bathroom. We’d definitely stay there again, just in a bigger room.
We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the shops in downtown Fernandina Beach. There are plenty of cute places to shop and eat, but my absolute favorite was Trailer Park Collectibles. Trailer Park is just the cutest antique and collectibles store. Mom and I spent over an hour there checking out all the vendors. If you like antiques and fun vintage items, you should definitely check them out.
Our last stop before heading back to the hotel for the evening was at Fantastic Fudge. We picked up some fudge for a snack that ended up turning into our dinner. Yes, mom and I had fudge for dinner – we were on vacation!
We really enjoyed Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach! It was the great place for a nice relaxing weekend. I’d love to go back in the spring or summer when its warmer and enjoy some time of the beach.
What a cute hotel! And you can’t beat that price! Wow!
Fudge for dinner is a perfectly acceptable option.
