Best early birthday weekend EVER!

For my birthday my bestie took me to the Omni Resort at Champions Gate in Davenport, FL (just south of Disney). Her and her husband had stayed there before and loved it. The promise of a fancy hotel with three pools (one of which was a lazy river), adult beverages, and time for my bestie was just what I needed.

We arrived around 1pm on Saturday and I couldn’t get over the sheer size of the hotel. You can see it from the interstate, but it doesn’t really prepare you for how big it is when you are actually standing in the parking lot. Wow.

Laura is a member of the Omni Select Guest program so when we arrived she had all ready been “checked in.” So all she had to do is show her ID and they handed over our room keys and we were on our way. It was great not having to deal with long lines or a lengthy check in process.

When we got to the room we pretty much threw down our stuff, put on our swimsuits, fixed a couple birthday beverages, and headed down to the pool. The room was pretty nice. Nothing overly insane, but it was a good size, clean, and bright. There was more than enough room for the two of us and all our crap. It is amazing how much of a mess two ladies can make in a hotel room.

The pool area at the Omni was AMAZING! There was a “formal pool” with cabanas you could rent (way too expensive for us) and a hot tub. Then there was a family pool that was HUGE, heated, and had a great big twisty slide. And last but definitely not least, there was a lazy river. I think that was my favorite of all the pools. We were able to spend about 3 hours at the pools before one of Florida’s signature thunderstorms rolled in and they had to close the pools. We knew they would roll through and the skies would clear in no time, but we decided to go ahead and head to dinner in the meantime.

Since we weren’t that far from Lake Buena Vista we decided to head to Sea Dog Brewing Company for dinner. I love their blueberry ale and thought it would be fun to try it out. We arrived right at 5 pm and didn’t have to wait at all to be seated. We started off with some pretzel sticks with beer cheese – oh my goodness, they were amazing. Laura got a burger and I got the bbq shrimp and bacon cheddar grits. I LOVE shrimp and grits and these definitely made me a happy Meghan. The bbq sauce and the avocado salsa really added to the dish. I probably could have eaten twice as much.

By the time we got back to the hotel the storm had cleared out and we planned to go back to the pool. When we got back to the room there was birthday cake! EEK! Laura had arranged for them to deliver a birthday cake to our room and it happened to show up while we were gone. I kept yelling “There is cake in my room!” It was funny, take my word for it. We were too full from dinner to enjoy it right then, so we went to the pool for awhile.

It was neat to be at the pools at night. We were able to watch the sunset over the golf course from the hot tub and then float around the lazy river in the dark. They have it all lit up and it kinda made me feel like I was on the Jurassic Park ride at Island of Adventure. We finally went back to the room around 10 and enjoyed some birthday cake while watching tv in our big comfy bed. Cake in bed is the best!

We woke up at a reasonable time on Sunday morning, had some cake for breakfast, and then went down to enjoy a couple more hours at the pool before we had to leave. It wasn’t as crowded as it had been on Saturday and we had plenty of time to enjoy the lazy river and for me to take another trip down the slide.

Before checking out we enjoyed lunch – subs that Laura had brought us from my favorite sub place in Tampa. Yum! It was an amazing weekend at an amazing hotel with my AMAZING best friend. I definitely am the  luckiest girl in the world!
