Starting on December 31, 2009 I took a self portrait in the bathroom of the house where I spent New Years Eve. I was tired and I didn’t look so great, but I wanted to document that night. My first NYE since my ex-husband left. Myself at 23 pounds lighter.
When NYE rolled around the next year I was in a completely different place once again, so I decided to take another self portrait that year as well. Big difference!
And then it kinda turned into an annual thing.
This year was the 4th picture and AGAIN I was in a completely different place. That seems to be the story of my life over the last few years. I decided to put all the pictures together so I could see how things had changed over the last four years. I was quite happy with what I saw.
I posted the picture on Facebook and I had a lot of people tell me that they liked the yearly self portrait idea and might start doing it as well. Then last night a friend texted me and told me that she loved the idea. She said “That is an awesome idea. I’m going to have to start doing that! I think as women we are hard on ourselves and each other. I think this is a great reminder to show ourselves what we have accomplished and make us work a little harder for ourselves.” Wow, I’d never really thought of it that way.
I’ll definitely be continuing this self portrait adventure and it will be interesting to see which of my friends play along. I know someone that also takes pictures of her husband and pets each year… wish I had thought of that when Pepper was a puppy. How cute would that have been?
