Half Marathon Training: Week 1

I have survived week 1 of half marathon training! You are probably thinking “Hasn’t she done this before?” or “Week 1? Thats nothing!” or “Why is she running ANOTHER half marathon?” Well, I haven’t really run since April so I really feel like I’m starting from square one. With 2 half marathons this fall (7 days apart) I decided that I really need to try and train this time. I do NOT want to die running on The Strip in Las Vegas.

Half Marathon Training: Week 1

I found a plan I liked that included 2 days of running during the week and a “long run” on the weekend. I wanted a 12 week plan but then when I went to start it realized I actually needed a 14 week plan. I liked the one I found so I just added two more weeks to the beginning, copying the first week of the plan. Since I wasn’t starting over I didn’t think that would be too big of a deal.

It is SUPER hot here in Florida right now so running outside after work just isn’t going to work for me. Thankfully I signed up for a year membership to YouFit and have access to a whole lot of treadmills. I really don’t like running on treadmills, but once again, I’m trying to avoid that whole dying thing.

Half Marathon Training: Week 1

The first two runs were 30 minutes each and I made it just over 2 miles. It was slow, it was rough, but I finished. The second day I even ran a tiny bit further. Over the weekend I was scheduled to run 3 miles. I saved it for Sunday when I knew I would be at my mom’s and have a nice safe neighborhood to run in. It was hot, it was humid, and I got lost – but I did it!

Half Marathon Training: Week 1

What did I learn in this first week of training? I learned 3 main things…

– I have a LONG way to go. I’m glad I started this now.
– I still love running, even when its hard and hot.
– I need to stop eating so much junk! I actually like healthy food, I just need to stop being so lazy and fix it for myself.

This weekend I’ll be doing my long run at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate and I’m REALLY excited about that. They have a trail that is about a mile and a quarter that I plan to hit first thing Sunday morning.
