I love #OrlandoBowlWeek because of the camaraderie, the history, and the fans that turn into family. The magic of this city comes alive during this time with fans from all over joining to celebrate this great American pastime. It’s not always about the game either.
Orlando’s bowl history began on Jan. 1, 1947, when unbeaten Maryville College from the hills of Tennessee played Catawba of North Carolina in the inaugural Tangerine Bowl matchup. With a charitable heart in mind, the game was set up as a fundraiser for the Harry Anna Crippled Children’s Hospital in Umatilla, which was sponsored by the Florida State Elks Association.
Now, 75 years later, Florida Citrus Sports (FCS) still embraces community and charity. FCS and its predecessors have helped thousands of at-risk youth in Central Florida through the Florida Citrus Sports Foundation and other outreach programs. Learn more about FCS and its effort to support our community here.
This year, No. 19 Clemson and Iowa State have been selected to play in the 2021 Cheez-It Bowl on Wednesday, December 29 at 5:45 p.m.
Then on New Year’s Day at 1:00 p.m. No. 15 Iowa and No. 22 Kentucky will square off in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl. Tickets to both matchups are on sale now at FloridaCitrusSports.com.
Since I’m not able to see my beloved Florida Gators play in their bowl game today, I’m excited to be heading to the Vrbo Citrus Bowl next week!
