Melissa’s Race is created by Melissa Vosburg Inc, a non-profit organization created in memory of Melissa Vosburg, a Sanford-area teacher who passed away in 2013 from Gioblastoma Multiforme, the most common form of brain cancer. All funds raised for Melissa’s Race benefit brain cancer research and awareness. The 5K to Battle Brain Cancer Research takes place in downtown Sanford, starting at Fort Mellon Park and winding through beautiful downtown Sanford on April 23, 2022.
Each year Melissa’s Race grows, raising more awareness for brain cancer and more money for brain cancer research. Serious runners will be glad to know that this is a chip-timed race, while casual runners and walkers will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Monroe and charming storefronts in historic downtown Sanford. Prizes will be awarded to individuals and teams who have top fundraising results!
Runners who are working to set a certain pace and finish within a certain time will be glad to know there are pacers assisting with this race, thanks to West Volusia Runners. Be sure to look for a pacer sign in your wave at the start line if you’re interested in keeping a set pace and finishing the race in a certain amount of time.
If you can’t make it to Sanford you can participate virtually, anywhere, anytime before April 23, 2022. Either way, you’ll earn a t-shirt, a unique medal designed by Melissa’s family, and support a great cause!
Returning this year, the “Brews for Brains” after party of Melissa’s Race takes place right at the finish line. Food trucks, vendors, and beer from Deviant Wolfe Brewing will be on hand to help raise money for brain cancer research. Plus there will be live music by Run Raquel and family-friendly activities. Whether you participate in the race or not, you can take part in after party!
