Meg’s Semi Homemade Hostess Cupcakes

After yesterday’s Finger Fiasco I planned to spend the day on the couch. As I was watching this weeks episode of Cupcake Wars a lightbulb went off! For the shower yesterday I made this super yummy marshmallow dip and I realized it would be the perfect filling for a cupcake. From that idea came Meg’s Semi Homemade Hostess Cupcakes.

Cupcake Ingredients

1 box Devil’s Food cake mix

Eggs, oil, and water (whatever the mix calls for)

Make cupcakes according to the directions on the box. Cool completely.


1 8 oz package cream cheese

1 jar of marshmallow fluff

1 tsp vanilla

Mix all three ingredients in the mixer. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

**Set aside a little bit of the filling if you want to make your cupcakes look like hostess cupcakes.

Filling the cupcakes isn’t an exact science, but it’s kind of tricky. Most places online say to use a pastry bag and a small tip. But all I had on hand was my trusty Pampered Chef Easy Accent Decorator. So I used that along with the smallest tip it had. I pushed it into the cupcake, put in a bit of the filling, and SLOWLY pulled out the decorator. Everything I read said to slowly pull it out, so I had a feeling that there most be something to this… they were right. If you did it too fast a bunch of the filling would come back out the top of the cupcake. So it’s just a bit of trial an error.

Chocolate Ganache

3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup heavy cream

Place a heat-proof bowl over a pot of simmering water, and whisk together the chocolate chips & cream. Continue whisking until chocolate is melted and the mixture is thick, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes.

After the ganache has cooled for 5 minutes, dip the cupcakes in the ganache. Once you have dipped them all, place them in the fridge so that the ganache will cool and harden some.

**To make these babies look like Hostess cupcakes, pipe some of the filling that you saved onto the top of the cupcakes in the signature swirlies.

Ta-da! Now that is one tasty looking cupcake! And guess what, it doesn’t just look tasty… it is tasty!

And what do you do with the leftover ganache? Dip animal crackers in it of course!
