Race #6: Melissa’s Race 5k – My 1st DNS

“Eek – I did a 5k on Saturday! With the BOLDERBoulder 10k just a little over a week away I decided that I needed to get in gear. I’ve been wanting to do this fundraiser 5k for a couple of years now so I was super excited when it worked out that I could participate this year.”

Race #6: Melissa's Race 5k - My 1st DNS

That was supposed to be the first paragraph of this post. Last night I laid out my Flat Meghan, set my alarm, and went to bed. Unfortunately when the alarm went off and I went to get out of bed it all went downhill from there. My hip was killing me, I was on the verge of a migraine, and my lack of sleep from the week was getting to me. I made the not so popular decision to go back to bed.

When I woke back up a couple hours later I still wasn’t happy. My hip still hurt (and my shoulder had joined the party), my head was still threatening to revolt, but at least I was well rested. Some days you just have to make the hard call and not get to that start line. Saturday was one of those days. I’m bummed that I missed out on the race again this year, but at least I made a donation to a wonderful cause. Next year I’ll be out there!

I had a rough last week and can honestly say that I can’t remember the last time I’ve been in this much of a funk. I cried, I had too much wine, and I hadn’t slept for shit. And to cap it all off, I had a super busy week at work. Not the best combo by far. But on Friday I am heading off to Colorado and I WILL be out of this funk. I spent my weekend catching up on chores and getting ready for my trip. Now I’ve just got to make it through 4 work days and I will be on my way.

The moral of this story? Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself if NOT toe that start line. Sometimes you need to give yourself a pass and go back to bed. Sometimes you need to think about how you are going to feel in the next couple of days (super sore in my situation), instead of focusing on right now. Sometimes it is okay to say no.

Great job at identifying what your body needed and listening to it! There will be more races. Best of luck this weekend and I hope you’re feeling better now. 🙂
