Easter Beach Run

Easter Beach Run 2014

Last Wednesday my friend Karen mentioned wanting to do the Easter Beach Run in Daytona Beach. Even though its my hometown I’d never done the race. After a little bit of back and forth we decided to register. I was going to be home anyway and it sounded like a nice way to start the weekend. 3 other friends and Karen’s mom ended up signing up so we had a good group going.

We met up around 8 am for an 8:30 start time. The weather was supposed to be gross and overcast, but at least it wasn’t supposed to rain. I didn’t have any trouble finding somewhere to park close to the race start, but I was bummed that I had to pay $10 to park. I understand all the lots in the area are pay lots but you’d think the city would have worked with them to get a reduced rate. I mean I’d already paid for the race and this brought the cost up to $40.

The race started at the Main Street Pier. We ran north for 2 miles and then turned around and came back the same two miles. The rain the night before meant that the sand was nice and hard, so it was easier to run on. Score!

For most of the race it was overcast and fairly cool. Around mile 3 the sun started to peak out and it got hot fast! I didn’t finish in record time, but I finished. And that was the important part. I finished my 4 miles AND I wasn’t in a ton of pain afterwards. It was just what I needed to show myself that I was ready to get back to running. Plus it was fun starting off the holiday weekend with a run on the beach with friends.

Bubba Gump was one of the main sponsors and boy did they deliver on post-race food. They had the normal post-race grub (bagels, fruit, etc), but also had Caesar salad and shrimp pasta available. I didn’t have any since we were going to brunch afterwards but another friend did and said it was great. Krispy Kreme was also there with their super cute VM bus handing out donuts. I did have one of those 🙂

After the race we headed across the street to The Lucky Rooster for beer and brunch. We picked this place based on its location (we could walk there), the fact they had beer, and a few positive Yelp reviews. How was it? Okay I guess. The food was pretty good, they had a nice selection of beers, but the service was lacking. Our waitress tried her best but two things we wanted to order they were out of and it took forever to get our drinks and food. I normally wouldn’t complain about this on a Saturday morning but they were NOT busy at all. But we were able to sit outside and enjoying spend the morning together. So all in all it worked out.

All in all it was a great morning and a great start to what turned out to be not such a great weekend. I’m glad I was able to spend the morning with some friends doing something that I love. And now I know that my hip is definitely better and I can get back to running more often. I mean I DO have two 1/2 marathons on the schedule for fall. I gotta get my butt in gear!
