This year in Savannah we decided to do the Remix Challenge. The Rock N Roll Remix Challenge gets you an extra medal (hooray extra bling) when you do two races in the same race weekend. We went one step further and did all THREE races in Savannah.
The 5k was on Sunday and didn’t start until 1 pm. What did this mean for us? It meant we could sleep in, grab a real breakfast, check out of the hotel, and make a stop at The Coffee Fox all before heading to the race.
Thankfully we arrived early and parking wasn’t an issue. We had plenty of time to check our bag and hang out for a bit before the 5k. I’d never done two races in the same weekend before, so our goal for the 5k (and the 1 miler) was to just finish. Completing both races on Sunday meant that we’d get the medals for those two races, the Remix Challenge medal, AND a pie. Yup, run two races in the same day and they hand you a fresh baked pie!
The 5k course went through some really pretty neighborhoods. You just assume that all the pretty houses are in downtown Savannah, but we found plenty of houses along the course that we would have been more than happy to move into. We kept with our intervals as much as we could and I was shocked when a mere 37 minutes later we were headed into the stadium to finish the race.
The 5k and 1 mile races both finish in Grayson Stadium, which is the home of the Savannah Bananas (nope, not kidding) baseball team. It was a lot of fun finishing there and it gives friends and families a fun spot to watch from.
After finishing the 5k we collected our 5k medals and then were headed over to get our Remix Challenge medals. I got an additional treat at the finish when I ran into my super awesome friend Amy from Lakeland. We had no idea the other one was there so it was a very nice surprise. We had just enough time to put our medals in our checked bags and enjoy a cold beer before heading back to the corrals for the 1 mile race. Why are we doing this? Oh yes, pie.
The 1 mile race was in the same neighborhood as the 5k and was full of families. I loved watching so many people racing with their kids. Great job being a good example to your kids!
Before we knew it the 1 mile race was over and we were collecting out fourth medal of the weekend. Jenn and I took some fun pictures with all of our medals and then did a quick clothing change before getting on the road. The late race starts meant that it was close to 3 pm before we were headed back to Florida. It didn’t matter though because we had a great time! I survived my first Remix Challenge and was looking forward to doing it again the following weekend in Vegas. Maybe.
