Post-Irma Wrap Up: By the Numbers

This past week and a half was insane. Less than 2 weeks after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, Hurricane Irma swept through the Caribbean islands and its way to Florida. Straight to where I lived. I rode out the storm alone in my home and I have to admit it is probably the most scared I’ve ever been. I made it out safely with minimal damage to my home, and those of my family, but I wanted to share some about the storm.

People without power: 5.4 million customers were without power in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina (as of yesterday)
Number of Flights cancelled: 16,000
Number of Florida national guard troops mobilized for relief and recovery efforts: 7,000
Number of shelters opened: 585

Number of tornado warnings my home was under: 4

Number of Category 4 hurricanes that have made landfall in the United States in the last three weeks: 2

As I write this and think about life starting to get “back to normal,” Hurricane Maria is moving through the Caribbean beating the hell out of them once again. We’ve got almost two months left of hurricane season and it honestly scares me what we could still be in for.
