I set my alarm on New Years Eve to get up and get in one last run for 2013. This month has been kinda lack luster in the running department AND I needed to take my new running shoes for a spin.
Then I didn’t sleep well at all.
And I turned off my alarm.
Well damn it.
I got up about an hour later than I planned, but was still too tired to even think about running. Then I got on Instagram and saw all my running friends posts about their “final runs of 2013” and I felt like a complete slacker. After about another hour of sitting on the couch I finally changed my clothes and headed out.
Ya know what finally changed my mind (other than all my friends making me feel like a slacker)? The Jost Running 5k virtual race medal sitting on my dining room table. I was sent both medals for December as part of my partnership with them, but I had yet to actually RUN a 5k in order to earn it and add it to my medal collection.
So I headed out with the intention of breaking in my new shoes and hitting that 3.1 mile mark…. if it killed me. I ended up running the first 2 miles and walking most of the third one. My goal was to FINISH. Not to finish fast or even gracefully, but just to finish. I wanted 2013 to go out with a bang, not a fizzle. I finished the 3.1 miles, I gave my new shoes their first run, and I felt great about ending my year on a positive note. I have 5 races scheduled in 11 weeks starting at the end of January and I needed to get my butt in gear. It’s amazing what a little bit of motivation, like an extra medal to add to your collection, will do to get you moving.
Did you get out and do anything to end 2013 on a high note?
Congrats!!!
