Race #15 of 2016: Rock N Roll San Antonio 10k

When my friend Lita and I originally decided to go to San Antonio for the Rock N Roll races I signed up for the 10k AND the half marathon. But by the time I got back from Las Vegas (and my second Remix Challenge in two weeks) I was seriously considering not doing the half. The closer I got the more I realized I just didn’t want to do it. So about a week out I decided just to do the 10k. Boy was that a good call!

Unfortunately the weather in San Antonio was not ideal for sight seeing or for running. It was fairly chilly and it rained the entire weekend. San Antonio isn’t quite prepared for it to rain for days at a time, so this caused some drainage issues around town as well. What a mess!

Thankfully the 10k had a later start than we are used to, 9 am to be exact, which meant that we didn’t have to be up as early as usual. We actually had time to grab some food at our hotel before heading out into the cold and rain. It was really nice to be able to have some eggs and coffee before the race. Our hotel was close enough to the start line that we were able to hang out in the nice warm hotel lobby until the very last minute and then walk over to the start line.

It had been raining on and off the since we got up, so we both had our rain jackets on. These stayed on for the whole race. The race started by the old train station and in the shadow of the Alamo Dome. Thankfully there were some places to stand out of the rain until it was time to get in the corrals to start the race.

The race got started right on time and next thing we knew we were headed out into the streets of San Antonio. It was a nice course with only a few small hills along the way. We got to see some neat architecture and a good amount of San Antonio along the way. One of my favorite things during the race was seeing professional athlete Andrea Duke running the race with her father. Here was a woman who can run a 1/2 marathon in less time than it takes me to run a 10k and she was hanging back with her dad. It was amazing. I totally would have stopped and asked her for a picture if it hadn’t been raining.

The race finish line was right by the Alamo which was really cool. The medals had the Alamo on them so of course we had to get some pictures with our medals in front of the Alamo. By the time we were done we were cold and wet, so we didn’t spend much time in the finishers area. All we could think about was hot showers and dry clothes!

Even with the weather we really enjoyed the race and my friend even got a 10k PR. It was a fun race to end the year on. In the end I was really glad that I chose to just do the 10k race. The weather was even worse on Sunday and I felt so bad for the 1/2 and full marathon runners.
