5 DIY New Home Projects

Moving into a new house means lots of new DIY projects. I haven’t had a chance to start on any yet, since I just moved in on Saturday, but I thought I’d put together a list of my top 5 DIY projects that I want to do.

Room Divider/Fridge Cover

The way my house is laid out the fridge is at the end of the kitchen by the dining area and one side of it is showing. I’m not sure why, but this drives me crazy. Mid-century modern homes had a lot of really cool room dividers. I want to build something similar to “cover” the side of the fridge that is showing.

Sunburst Mirror

Sunburst mirrors and clocks were really popular in mid-century design and I’ve been really interested in making one of my own. My mom has been pinning ideas for my new house and pinned one of these mirrors. I got a chuckle out of it when I realized it was a project that Sarah from Sarah Hearts had done. I was like “I know her!”

Mid-Century Modern Recovered Chairs

A couple weeks ago I picked up a pair of old office chairs at Habitat Restore that looked very Mid-Century. Since they were only $10 each I decided to buy them and figure out what I was going to do with them later. They are currently a pretty awful brown vinyl and I know that regardless of where they end up in my house I’m going to have to recover them.

Telephone Table

Years ago I bought an amazing two tiered telephone table at Goodwill for less than $5. It was another one of those pieces that I couldn’t pass up even though I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. It has a between design in the wood working, but unfortunately the top tier has some water damage. I decided that once I figured out what I was going to do with it that I’d paint part or all of it.

It is currently being used as an end table/laptop stand in my new house. Once I figure out what I’m doing about a couch I’m going to paint it. When I came across this plan for a similar table I fell in love. I’m not a huge fan of gold but its very prominent in Mid-Century modern design, so I’m starting to like it more and more every day.

Air Conditioner Cover

Outside AC units are a necessary but ugly evil. Unfortunately mine sits about 10 feet from my back door so its one of the first things you see when you walk out the door. So I definitely want to do something to cover it up. I’ve found a lot of easy options so I’m hoping this will be one of the first project that I work on.

You can totally do it Whitney, you just have to start small and work your way up. And thankfully I have a really handy mom to help me out 🙂

Meghan, I love these idea you have. I can’t wait to see what you do with your new home. I’m going to have to tuck some of these ideas away for when I am in home project mode.

I also love the mid century designed homes. They have so much more character than newer homes in my opinion.
